Nicosia: The Government of Cyprus is intensifying its diplomatic actions to end the illegal detention of five Greek Cypriots in the Turkish-occupied regions of the island.
According to Cyprus News Agency, these actions include denouncing the ongoing detentions to international bodies and prominent figures such as the UN Secretary-General, the Presidents of the European Union Institutions, and the EU High Representative.
The five Greek Cypriots, all aged over 60, were arrested on July 19 near Turkish-occupied Trikomo on suspicion of espionage. The Cyprus government has condemned these actions as illegal, provocative, and inhumane. President Nikos Christodoulides has described the decision of the “military court” in the occupied territories as “an illegal and fascist decision” that could harm Turkish Cypriots the most.
Cyprus is also considering taking legal action at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) level over this matter, emphasizing the violation of fundamental principles of law and human rights. The European Commission has expressed concern over the so-called prosecution of the Greek Cypriots, reiterating that it does not recognize the self-declared state in the northern part of Cyprus nor its judiciary.
Meanwhile, Cyprus continues to stress its commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem. President Christodoulides has expressed belief in the potential resolution and reunification of the island. Despite the obstacles, Cyprus supports the initiative of the UN Secretary-General for tangible results in resuming talks and resolving the Cyprus issue.
The situation continues to draw international attention, with Cyprus appealing to the EU institutions and member states for pressure on Turkey for the release of the detained individuals. The Republic of Cyprus remains steadfast in its diplomatic endeavors, seeking justice and resolution in accordance with international law.
