Nicosia: The negotiators from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, Menelaos Menelaou and Gunes Onar, are scheduled to meet during the first week of September. This meeting aims to address ongoing issues related to the division of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, it has not yet been confirmed if a trilateral meeting involving the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, will take place. However, the Greek Cypriot side has expressed readiness for such discussions. Holguin is expected to arrive in Cyprus on September 1 and will subsequently hold separate meetings with the leaders of the two communities, President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, on September 2.
Cyprus has faced division since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite multiple rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has remained elusive. The most recent negotiations, conducted in July 2017 at Crans-Montana in Switzerland, concluded without resolution due to ongoing disagreements.
In July 2025, a second informal meeting on Cyprus was held in New York, following the initial meeting in March 2025. Another session is anticipated later this year to further explore initiatives agreed upon by the parties. UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres stated that these efforts signify a continued commitment to dialogue. Guterres also announced plans to meet with Cyprus leaders during the General Assembly high-level week in September.
Current discussions between the two communities focus on unresolved matters, such as the opening of crossing points and a solar energy project in the buffer zone. The parties have also agreed to cooperate on exchanging cultural artifacts. Maria Angela Holgun will persist in her mediation efforts, while the European Commission has appointed Johannes Hahn as Special Envoy for Cyprus to support the settlement process alongside Holgun.
