Nicosia: Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou informed CNA on Saturday that the government is actively involved in damage control concerning the unfinished Vassiliko LNG terminal project. This statement comes in the wake of a report by OMEGA TV that revealed significant technical problems identified by the project coordinator.
According to Cyprus News Agency, a technical consultant has been appointed to prepare a detailed report on the Vassiliko terminal, which is expected to be finalized soon. Papanastasiou emphasized the importance of assigning responsibilities for the design flaws and technical decisions that have led to these issues, highlighting potential safety concerns during the terminal’s operation.
The Minister further explained that once the technical consultant completes the report, it will be submitted to the Natural Gas Infrastructure Company, ETYFA. Subsequently, ETYFA will forward the report to the Ministry, which will then determine the subsequent course of action.
In relation to the Floating Regasification Storage Unit (FRSU) ‘Prometheus’, Papanastasiou mentioned that it is currently in Malaysia undergoing necessary modifications to be equipped as a floating gasification unit. A suitable terminal is being sought to conduct performance tests on this unit, which is anticipated to be ready by October.
