Cyprus and Greece upgrade cooperation in health services for the benefit of citizens

A two-year Memorandum of Cooperation was signed on Friday at the Ministry of Health in Nicosia between the Ministries of Health of Cyprus and Greece, in order to develop and offer quality health services to the citizens of the two countries.

The Memorandum was signed by Minister of Health Michalis Hadjipantela and his Greek counterpart Thanos Plevris. It was signed in the framework of the policy of the Ministry of Health to further deepen its cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Greece and the Cooperation Agreement in the field of Health and Medical Science signed in 1987.

The Memorandum includes actions related to the exchange of good practices and know-how for the upgrading of the Primary Health Care Services of the Hellenic Republic and the Republic of Cyprus, the detection of human resource needs and the implementation of staff exchange programmes and cooperation for orders and supplies of drugs, mainly oncology medications.

In his statements after signing the memorandum, Hadjipantela said that the visit of his Greek counterpart confirms the determination and sincere commitment for further development of the strong bilateral ties of friendship and cooperation that they have developed. Today, he said, “we can be proud of building an excellent bilateral relationship, which is constantly being strengthened and upgraded, as evidenced by today’s signing of important Memoranda of Cooperation between the Ministries of Health.”

On his part, Plevris said that the Memorandum has a symbolic character that shows the comfort that the two Ministers and the two states feel for a close cooperation in the field of health. It also has a substantial content as it has a more holistic approach, in order to exchange common practices in the field of primary health, but it has particularly important chapters in the field of infections and surveillance in hospitals, but also in the area of pharmaceutical expenditure.

Greece and Cyprus intend to form a common front in the protection of Public Health and to develop and strengthen scientific cooperation between them on issues of mutual interest.
