The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for de-escalation of the violence in Jerusalem

Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs called today for calm, restraint and de-escalation of the violence, in view of the latest upsurge of violence in East Jerusalem, on Friday.

The MFA posted on Twitter that is “joining calls for calm, restraint & de-escalation after the upsurge of violence and tension in the old city of Jerusalem”.

“Preserving the historic status quo of the Holy Sites is imperative, particularly during this time of sacred blessings for the three monotheistic religions”, the post adds.

The violence in the Square of the Mosques in East Jerusalem, which is considered the third holiest location for Islam and has been a Palestinian sector occupied by Israel since 1967, is considered to be a reaction to the latest Israeli attacks in the West Bank. Approximately 152 Palestinians were injured by the Israeli Police, which suppressed the uprising.
