Cyprus reports 6 deaths on Friday and 3,020 new COVID cases, 107 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry announced on Friday that 6 patients passed away due to COVID and 3,020 new cases were diagnosed. The positivity rate stands at 3.26%. Total deaths rose to 895 and cases to 347,876. The Ministry said that 113 people are hospitalised, of whom 22 in serious condition.

The deceased are 6 women, a 88-year-old who died on 2 January, a 29- year-old who passed away on 8 March, a 84-year-old and a 83-year-old who died yesterday, as well as a 93-year-old and a 82-year-old who passed away today.

Of the 21 patients in serious condition, 7 are intubated in an ICU and 14 in an ACU.

Figures show that 52.34% of the patients are unvaccinated. Moreover 20 patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in an ICU.

Today a total of 92,720 tests were carried out of which 4,121 were PCR tests and 339 cases were diagnosed

Cyprus reports on Thursday 3 deaths and 3,473 new COVID cases, 113 patients in hospitals

Cyprus Health Ministry on Thursday announced that 3 patients passed away due to COVID and 3,473 new cases were diagnosed. The positivity rate stands at 3.52%. Total deaths rose to 889 and of cases to 344,856. The Ministry said that 113 people are hospitalized, of whom 22 in serious condition.

The deceased are a female, 54 years old who died yesterday, a female 85 years of age who also passed away today and a male 89 years old who also lost his life today.

Of the 22 patients in serious condition, 8 are intubated in an ICU and 14 in an ACU.

Figures show that 57.53% of the patients are unvaccinated. Moreover 21 patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in an ICU.

Today a total of 98,705 tests were carried out of which 3,868 were PCR and 386 cases were diagnosed (Positivity rate 9.98%).

Health Ministry says 55% of patients in hospitals unvaccinated, those vaccinated with booster shot reach 35%

The Health Ministry on Thursday said that 55% of the patients in hospitals, up until March 8, are unvaccinated while 35% of patients are fully vaccinated and with a booster shot. The figures were published in an effort to enhance transparency and properly inform citizens, it is added.

In a press release, the Ministry clarified that figures do not include post COVID patients. All numbers show that the risk for hospitalization of unvaccinated people is 4 to 7 times bigger than those who got their shots, it was noted.

Figures show moreover that partially vaccinated patients are 8%, fully vaccinated patients 2% and fully vaccinated with a booster shot 35%. A percentage of 80.5% those fully vaccinated with a booster jab refers to people aged 70 and over.

Turkey’s non-alignment with EU’s sanctions on Russia is problematic, says President Anastasiades

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades underlined the role that Cyprus can play in providing the European Union with energy and the problematic fact that Turkey has not aligned itself with the EU’s sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, during his remarks in the afternoon session of the first day of the informal European Council summit in Versailles, France.

He also pointed out that plans to strengthen Europe`s defence need to take into account the threats and challenges that Cyprus and Greece face from Turkey.

According to a written statement by government spokesman Marios Pelekanos, President Anastasiades said in his intervention that the Republic of Cyprus, “as a country under occupation for almost 48 years that continues to experience the consequences of the Turkish invasion, fully understands what is happening now in Ukraine”.

Research Minister tells EU counterparts of need for common approach to cyber security

Cyprus Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Kyriacos Kokkinos focused on the need for a common approach to cyber security and reliability, as well as the importance of skills development and transnational cooperation, during the Informal Meeting of Ministers of Telecommunications, which was held in France on March 8th-9th.

Council of Europe ?inisters exhort Turkey to compensate the families of nine missing Greek Cypriots

The Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers has exhorted the Turkish authorities to abide by their international obligations and pay the “just satisfaction” awarded by the European Court of Human Rights to relatives of nine Greek Cypriots who disappeared during Turkey’s military invasion to Cyprus in 1974, a press release by the CoE says.

In September 2009, the European Court found Turkey to have violated the European Convention on Human Rights due to the failure of the Turkish authorities to conduct effective investigations into the fate of the people involved and the inhuman treatment of their relatives.

The Court ruled that Turkey was to pay a total of 108,000 euros in damages and 72,000 euros in costs and expenses to the relatives by 18 December 2009.

The theme “The protection and security of places of worship – securing the rights of every person – protecting religious, historical and cultural heritage” is under the auspices of the Centre for Social Innovation.

The Protection and Security for Places of Worship is an innovative project, funded by the Internal Security Fund Police (ISFP) of the European Commission and aims to enhance protection at places of worship in European countries, by setting up cooperation between public authorities, religious leaders, civil society actors, and the local communities, by developing their capacity to counteract radicalisation and hate-speech.

Ukraine should function as a bridge between the East and the West, not a frontier in big power confrontation, the Ambassador of China to Cyprus, Liu Yantao, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), stressing that “the Cold War mentality should be discarded completely.”

Moreover, he stressed that “China is prepared to continue playing a constructive role in facilitating dialogue for peace, and work alongside the international community to carry out necessary mediation, if it is needed.”

Cabinet approves purchase of grain by the state to deal with crisis, ready for more orders if needed, says Minister

The Cabinet approved on Wednesday a proposal tabled by the Minister of Agriculture which provided that the government will buy quantities of grain in order to deal with the crisis following Russia`s invasion to Ukraine.

Agriculture Minister Costas Kadis told the press after the meeting of the Ministerial Council that the state will purchase 36,000 tons of barley and corn, to increase stockpile capacity due to the crisis.

He assured that situation is under assessment and if necessary, new orders will be placed.

Cyprus dispatches 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Ukraine in a demonstration of solidarity, Foreign Ministry says

Cyprus on Tuesday dispatched the first tranche of humanitarian aid to war-ravaged Ukraine, as a demonstration of “tangible solidarity” to the Ukrainian people, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

The humanitarian aid will be transported via cargo ship to Thessaloniki and then to Poland where the European Union has established a logistics hub of the Union Civil Protection Mechanism in cooperation with the Polish authorities.

According to the Ministry the first tranche involves 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid including 80 tonnes of food supplies (infant milk and food, flour, long life food), shelter equipment (sleeping bags, tents, blankets, biological toilets), 13 tonnes of medical supplies and medicines, 5000 pairs of shoes, 22500 liters of bottled water, electricity generator, personal hygiene kits and other civil protection and first aid equipmen
