SHAKA ILEMBE IS READY TO HIT GLOBAL SCREENS!

Johannesburg, June 02, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —
  • MultiChoice Group, the largest producer of original content on the African continent, is set to debut SHAKA ILEMBE, its biggest ever primetime-drama series.
  • Created by the award-winning South African Emmy and Oscar nominated team at Bomb Productions, with global star Nomzamo Mbatha taking on double billing as lead actress and Executive Producer.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed MultiChoice Group is about to debut it’s biggest ever prime-time drama series, Shaka Ilembe, an epic 12-part tale that follows the origins story of the legendary African monarch and military strategist, King Shaka. Six years in the making, the highly anticipated series boasts the talents of some of South Africa’s biggest stars, including Coming 2 America lead actress Nomzamo Mbatha.

With the epic series launching across sub-Saharan Africa on MultiChoice’s video entertainment service DStv this June, Shaka Ilembe is already attracting significant interest outside of the continent. MultiChoice Studios, the busy sales and distribution arm of the sub-Saharan business, is hard at work introducing the title to international buyers at film markets from Cannes to Los Angeles, building on a growing MultiChoice slate of original production exports including the Emmy nominated Reyka and the Deon Meyer penned Trackers.

For Nomsa Philiso, CEO of MultiChoice General Entertainment, Shaka Ilembe offers audiences worldwide the opportunity to immerse into a rich dynastic African story, set in the 1700’s.

“We are confident that this series will travel. It speaks, not only the heritage of the Zulu Nation, but to the fascination that the world has always had with King Shaka. It speaks to Africans owning the stories that their ancestors lived. And it celebrates that, long before colonialism, beyond the pages of history, there was a majestic ancient era of African Kings and Queens, warriors, healers, and leaders who lived, loved, ruled, battled, and above all, entrenched a legacy and culture that endures even today. Further, the series was filmed in isiZulu so it carries a distinct language identity, but it will be sub-titled in multiple languages so audiences from across the globe can enjoy it.”

Central to the Shaka Ilembe story is actress Nomzamo Mbatha, who balances her Executive Producer responsibilities with fulfilling a life-long ambition to play King Shaka’s beloved mother, Queen Nandi.

Speaking to her dual roles on Shaka Ilembe, Mbatha says, “This series is rich in depth, and was shot in 4K on a tremendous scale that fuels the narrative. From the fierce battlefield choreography and the meticulous accuracy of the wardrobe to the resonance of the script, it’s remarkable. And while this is a fictional story, it’s inspired by real events, people, and places. Already, ahead of our domestic launch audiences at home are very supportive because, they know like I do, that TV series like Shaka Ilembe transcends entertainment, and delivers representation, diversity, and progress.”

Mbatha leads off a top-flight ensemble cast featuring some of the country’s most charismatic leading men – Lemogang Tsipa, Senzo Radebe, Wiseman Mncube, Thembinkosi Mthembu and Mondli Makhoba alongside powerful character actresses Khabonina Qubeka, Sthandiwe Kgoroge, Dawn Thandeka King and rising star Hope Mbhele. Meanwhile, playing the boy destined to be King, is gifted young newcomer Ntando Zondi whose prodigious talent was unearthed during the filming of the series.

Filmed in South Africa, SHAKA ILEMBE features much of the country’s magnificent wildlife and scenery, including the mountains, savanna, and coastline of the lushly beautiful province of KwaZulu Natal, home to the majority of South Africa’s Zulu people. Key filming locations here included the towns of Eshowe, Nkandla Forest, Port Edward, Drakensburg, Mooi River and Zulu Falls.

Meanwhile other parts of the series were shot on a purpose-built backlot near the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Cradle of Humankind” where Emmy and Academy nominated showrunners Bomb Productions hosted the King of the Zulu Nation, His Excellency Misuzulu kaZwelithini, during a special visit to the set for the Royal to see first-hand the level of detail and care that was employed to ensure that the authenticity of the set.

For Mauro Black, MultiChoice Studios Content, Sales, and Distributions Director, it is this credibility of intention and execution that makes SHAKA ILEMBE a powerful cultural export.

“International buyers are discerning about what they will bring their local audiences from the global TV marketplace. So, from inception, SHAKA ILEMBE was crafted to weld an immense depth of oral, written and illustrated Zulu history into the framework of a highly watchable prime-time drama. The result is a deeply meaningful but profoundly enjoyable title that should win fans in markets as diverse as Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.”

With over 8000 people contributing their skills to create Shaka Ilembe, the series has already won the support of five of South Africa’s biggest brands (Telkom, LottoStar, Grant’s Whisky, Toyota SA and Santam) who all signed on as commercial partners within days of seeing an extended preview of the series.  In addition, it’s Academy Award and BAFTA nominated Creative Director Angus Gibson and Sundance winning Executive Producer Desiree Markgraaff have drawn from the best of South Africa’s talent, including acclaimed Zulu musician Mbuso Khoza whose skill and vision drives the series soundtrack.

Oil prices up with approval of US debt ceiling

Oil prices increased on Friday as investors priced in the lifting of the US debt ceiling, despite market uncertainty ahead of the much-anticipated OPEC+ meeting, which is widely expected to yield an unchanged production policy.

International benchmark Brent crude traded at $75.08 per barrel at 09.33 a.m. local time (0633 GMT), a 1.07% rise from the closing price of $74.28 a barrel in the previous trading session on Friday.

The American benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded at the same time at $70.82 per barrel, up 1.02% from the previous session’s close of $70.10 per barrel.

Both benchmarks are on track to slash their marginal weekly losses after investors throughout the week priced in the US debt ceiling decision to set the maximum amount of outstanding federal debt that the US government can incur.

Averting a first-ever catastrophic default on the nation’s debt before a June 5 deadline, the US Senate passed a bill to suspend the debt ceiling late Thursday.

This came as the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) released the ISM Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which indicated a contraction in the country’s manufacturing sector in May for the seventh consecutive month, limiting crude oil prices’ upward trajectory.

Another headwind to limit price upticks was the less-than-expected rise in US commercial crude oil inventories, which rose by around 4.5 million barrels to 459.7 million barrels, against the American Petroleum Institute’s forecast of a jump of 5.2 million barrels.

Positive demand sentiment in the market was supported by reports that manufacturing activity in China recovered for the first time in three months in May.

The Caixin China General Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) increased to 50.9 in May from 49.5 in April, owing to a robust and rapid growth in output in May.

With a rise above the neutral level of 50, the result marked the first improvement in overall manufacturing sector conditions since February.

OPEC+ meeting in focus

As markets await Sunday’s meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, known as OPEC+, experts say the group will most probably keep its production level unchanged.

Rystad Energy on Thursday said the 23-member group could decide to maintain the current production policy, citing tight market conditions that are expected to lead to higher oil prices in the second half of the year.

The meeting will be the group’s first ministerial meeting after some OPEC+ countries in April decided to cut output by 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd) on top of their existing cuts of 2 million bpd in place since October last year.

Without ruling out “further production cuts”, Jorge Leon, senior vice president of oil market research at Rystad Energy, predicted that the group may stick to current production levels, taking a “wait and see” approach.

Imran Khan files defamation suit against Pakistan’s anti-graft body over ‘unlawful’ arrest

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said he filed a defamation case against the chief of the country’s anti-corruption agency over his recent “unlawful” arrest, saying the move “adversely affected” his reputation.

Khan said he served the legal notice to Nazir Ahmad Butt, a retired military general, seeking PKR 15 billion, or $52.8 million in damages.

The ex-prime minister, who was ousted in a no-confidence vote last April and has since been campaigning for snap general elections, was arrested from inside the Islamabad High Court on May 9 in a corruption case.

His brief detention, which was later declared illegal, triggered protests and attacks on state and military installations.

Since then, thousands of workers and leaders belonging to Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have been detained, many of whom have quit the party, or politics altogether. Some of those involved in the violence will be tried in military courts, according to the government.

Khan tweeted that the arrest warrant was issued on a public holiday, and was kept in secrecy for eight days, he was not informed that the corruption case inquiry against him was changed into an investigation, and that the paramilitary force, Pakistan Rangers, used ‘brute force’ while taking him into custody.

‘Ulterior motive was to defame me by arresting me … And show the world that I was arrested on corruption charges,’ he said, adding that his ‘credibility has never been questioned.’

The ‘act of implicating me in a bogus inquiry followed by my illegal and mala fide arrest, have adversely affected my reputation. It has subjected me to ridicule. Therefore, I am well within my right to initiate Defamation proceedings,’ he said.

Khan is facing more than a hundred cases ranging from rioting, terrorism and corruption, which he says are politically motivated and meant to boot him out of politics.

Meanwhile, Jibran Nasir, a well-known rights activist and lawyer, was abducted from near his residence in Karachi late Thursday, his wife said.

Journalist Imran Riaz Khan continues to remain missing since he was picked up on May 11, with police having failed to produce him before any court.

Starovoit called on citizens to remain calm and report findings of any suspicious objects, including aerial vehicles.

No promise to renounce use of force: China on Taiwan unification

China has said it makes ‘no promise’ to renounce the use of force in unifying Taiwan with its mainland, according to an official statement.

‘Taiwan is part of China,’ Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Gen. Li Shangfu told his Singaporean counterpart Ng Eng Hen in a meeting on Thursday, the statement released by the Defense Ministry said.

‘China will strive for a peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and utmost effort as always,’ Li added.

Beijing considers Taiwan as its ‘breakaway province’ while Taipei has insisted on its independence since 1949, maintaining independent diplomatic relations with 13 nations.

‘We will never allow Taiwan’s (ruling) Democratic Progressive Party authorities to court foreign support for the so-called ‘Taiwan independence,’ nor allow the external forces to use Taiwan as a pawn to contain China. We make no promise to renounce the use of force,’ Li stressed.

In recent years, the US has increased its engagements with the island nation of around 24 million people.

Washington has supplied arms to Taiwan for billions of dollars, and Washington and Taipei signed an agreement on Thursday to boost bilateral trade.

Dubbed the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade, Taipei called it an “effort to deepen the economic and trade relationship” between the two sides.

“The two sides will now work toward the commencement of negotiations with the goal of reaching high-quality and economically meaningful trade agreements,” a statement by Taiwan’s Office of Trade Negotiations noted.

Meanwhile, China and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a ‘secure defense telephone link’ between the two militaries.

Azerbaijan accuses Macron of distorting outcome of meeting on peace treaty with Armenia

Azerbaijan on Friday accused French President Emmanuel Macron of distorting the outcome of Thursday’s meeting between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, France and Germany and the head of the European Council in Moldova.

“The unilateral statement about the meeting made by the president of France does not reflect and distorts the positions of the parties. Unfortunately, this is not the first case of such behavior on the part of France, and it does not contribute at all to the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, peace and stability in the region,” said Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Ayhan Hacizade.

After the meeting, Macron claimed that the European leaders called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to comply with all their obligations, in particular, to release prisoners of war as soon as possible, and stressed the importance of “protecting rights and guarantees for Armenians living in Karabakh.”

An informal meeting was held Thursday in Moldova’s capital between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia, France and Germany and the head of the European Council to discuss the normalization process between Yerevan and Baku.

Following the meeting, European Council President Charles Michel said the event was “a very good preparation for the next one,” which will take place in Brussels on July 21, he added. ?

Relations between the two former Soviet republics have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

In the fall of 2020, Azerbaijan liberated several cities, villages and settlements from Armenian occupation during 44 days of clashes. The Russia-brokered peace agreement is celebrated as a triumph in Azerbaijan.

Despite the ongoing talks on a peace agreement, tensions between the neighboring countries increased in recent months over the Lachin corridor, the only land route giving Armenia access to Karabakh.

New building of CYENS Centre of Excellence to be handed over in August

The new building of the CYENS Centre of Excellence, which is housed in the old Municipal Market building, in old Nicosia, is expected to be handed over in August 2023. For this project, a total of pound 36 million was raised from funds of the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus.

These figures were reported on Friday noon during a media tour of the CYENS building, which is still under construction.

Constantinos Yiorkadjis, Mayor of Nicosia and chairman of the Board of Directors of the CYENS Centre of Excellence, said that the building under construction “is a very good example of how timely we applied for the CYENS Centre of Excellence in the Horizon 2020 programme.” At the same time, he continued, “there was a request from other European funds to repair and use the specific building as a research centre.” “We used two different European tools to achieve multiple goals,” he explained.

Yiorkadjis stated that the CYENS Centre of Excellence is located in the centre of Nicosia “to begin the gradual revitalization of the Green Line area, and at the same time – again with European funds – to upgrade a beautiful building, save it and modernise it so that it can accept its new use as a research centre.”

Asked about the amount of funding received by the CYENS Centre of Excellence, the Mayor of Nicosia stated that it received a grant of pound 30 million from the “Horizon 2020” programme, of which pound 15 million came from the European Union and the other pound 15 million from the Republic of Cyprus. Additionally, pound 6 million were received from the European funds requested by the Municipality of Nicosia. The funds, as he said, included Trikoupi Street as a hub for creative businesses. “When you combine European funds and state resources, you can create projects that have multiple benefits,” he indicated.

During the tour, it was noted that the upper floor of the building will house the Centre’s researchers and administration, while the ground floor will offer services that will be open to the industry and the public, such as a coworking space, seminar rooms, an exhibition space for the presentation of the technologies developed by the Centre, as well as a café.

Furthermore, it was noted that all areas of the building are accessible to people with disabilities. There are two lifts that give access to all areas, while in the basement there is a bicycle parking area, showers, as well as a shower for the disabled.
