Nicosia: President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides said on Thursday he is visiting Italy later in the day with the aim of upgrading bilateral ties in all areas, including defence.
According to Cyprus News Agency, upon arrival at the 'Battlefield ReDEFiNED 2026' conference in Nicosia, the President was asked about his visit to Rome and stated that the main objective is "the shared political will" to enhance relations with Italy across various domains. He mentioned that relevant statements would be made following his meeting later in the afternoon with the Italian Prime Minister.
The President emphasized the effort to elevate relations to the level Cyprus shares with other European states, citing France as an example of particularly upgraded relations. He noted that this is the goal for both Italy and the Republic of Cyprus in multiple sectors.
Addressing his presence at the exhibition on the Cypriot defence industry, the President highlighted defence as a key area for cooperation with Italy. He pointed out the significant prospects in the field of defence and security between the two nations.
When asked about energy cooperation, the President mentioned an upcoming meeting with ENI's Chief Executive Officer, Claudio Descalzi, scheduled for the following morning. The discussion is expected to focus on the latest planning related to Cyprus's goal of exporting natural gas via Egypt to Europe.
