UNFICYP investigating incident in Ledra Palace, Siddique tells CNA

UNFICYP is aware of the allegations and is investigating the incident, UNFICYP Spokesperson Aleem Siddique, said here today.

Invited by CNA to comment on an alleged incident reported in Turkish Cypriot media between UN peacekeepers and members of the Turkish occupying security forces, involving cleaning activity near Ledra Palace in the buffer zone, Siddique said that the incident was resolved through peaceful dialogue and noted that the situation remains calm now.

He noted that UNFICYP is aware of the allegations and is investigating the incident, indicating that all UN peacekeepers "are required to abide by the highest standards of conduct and are always held accountable for their actions."

'We will not hesitate to take appropriate action following a thorough investigation,' UNFICYP's spokesperson added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
