UN top official in Cyprus hosts first meeting between new Greek Cypriot negotiator and Turkish Cypriot Special Representative

New negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side on the Cyprus problem, Menelaos Menelaou, and Turkish Cypriot Special Representative, Ergün Olgun, had their first meeting on Friday.

The meeting, which took place at Ledra Palace hotel, in the buffer zone, was hosted by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart.

UN in Cyprus said in a post on its Twitter account that today, top UN official in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, hosted the first meeting of Turkish Cypriot Special Representative, Ergün Olgun, and newly appointed Greek Cypriot Negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, at Ledra Palace hotel inside the bufferzone.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
