New york: President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, announced that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has conveyed a message to Cyprus leaders, emphasizing the need to resume settlement talks from the point they were left off in Crans Montana. This development came after a meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York, which included Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting with the UN chief concluded around 20:00 Cyprus time. President Christodoulides stated that although Guterres acknowledged the challenges posed by developments in the Turkish-occupied territories of Cyprus, he was determined to hold the meeting to signal his unwavering commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue. Guterres assured the leaders of his continuous efforts towards this goal, expressing his intent to resume talks from the previous discussions in Crans-Montana.
During the meeting, it was agreed that following the electoral process in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, will visit Cyprus, the guarantor powers, and Brussels. This visit aims to lay the groundwork for an expanded conference, which, as per Guterres, is expected to occur before the end of the year. The goal of the conference is to restart substantive discussions from where they were halted in Crans-Montana.
