UK Europe Minister to visit Cyprus on Tuesday

The Minister for Europe of the United Kingdom, Leo Docherty, is paying an official visit to Cyprus on Tuesday 9 May in an effort to deepen the close ties between the two countries and following the recent cooperation between the two countries on the removal of civilians from Sudan. According to a statement from the British High Commission in Cyprus, Docherty will meet President Nikos Christodoulides to thank him and the Cypriot authorities for their contribution and cooperation to the evacuation of British and Cypriot nationals from Sudan, the largest and longest, as noted, evacuation effort of any Western nation, and will also reiterate and discuss the UK’s support for a just and lasting solution to the Cyprus settlement process. It is added that Docherty will also meet British peacekeepers serving with the UN peacekeeping mission to Cyprus and will tour the British base in Dhekelia to meet serving military and civilian personnel and thank them for their role in the evacuation efforts from Sudan. Furthermore, in a meeting with Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, the British Minister will explore how the UK and Cyprus can build upon last year’s Memorandum of Understanding, committed to boosting collaboration on foreign policy, security, science, climate and trade. Minister Docherty will also meet Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar to reiterate UK support for the UN-led process towards a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus issue, the statement concludes.
