UCY Among World’s Leading Institutions in 8 Academic Subjects in GRAS 2025

Nicosia: The University of Cyprus (UCY) is listed among the world’s top universities in eight academic subjects, according to the 2025 results of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) published by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the University stated in a press release that it is placed among the leading institutions worldwide in Automation and Control (101-150), Education (201-300), Psychology (201-300), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (201-300), Management (301-400), Telecommunication Engineering (301-400), Environmental Science and Engineering (401-500), and Physics (401-500).

The statement further highlighted that this subject-based distinction aligns with the University’s overall standing in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, where the University of Cyprus is placed in the 801-900 band, remaining the only university in Cyprus included in the list.

These rankings underscore the University’s reputation and strategic position on the international academic map, reflecting its sustained investment in research excellence, high-quality teaching, and international cooperation. As Cyprus’ first public university, UCY continues to enhance its global footprint, support leading researchers, and offer students contemporary academic programs with a strong research dimension and societal impact.

UCY Rector, Professor Tasos Christofides, remarked on the significance of the rankings, noting that “Rankings such as ShanghaiRanking traditionally ‘favour’ long-established universities with centuries of history, which count Nobel laureates and other major distinctions among their staff and alumni. The inclusion of a relatively young institution such as the University of Cyprus is therefore an achievement in itself.”

Professor Christofides emphasized the importance of international rankings as a communication tool to present the breadth of work carried out by the academic community, stating that the strongest confirmation of the University’s quality comes from the work of its people, societal relevance, and the contributions of its students and graduates.
