Twenty-Two Cypriots Stranded in Tanzania Amid Unrest, MFA in Contact for Safe Return

Nicosia: Twenty-two people, most of them Cypriot citizens, are currently stranded in Tanzania and are in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an effort to return home, according to the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Theodoros Gotsis, who spoke to CNA.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Ministry had issued a travel advisory for Tanzania on Friday, urging Cypriot citizens to exercise a high degree of caution due to ongoing unrest and the imposition of a curfew in the country. Among the 22 individuals who reached out to the Ministry, 14 are students from a private school involved in a volunteer programme. These students are accompanied by four adults, which include two escorts and two volunteers from Greece. Additionally, four other Cypriots are in Tanzania for other reasons.

Gotsis stated that the Crisis Management Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was activated immediately to coordinate efforts for the safe return of these individuals. The Ministry is working in collaboration with the High
Commission in Nairobi, which also covers Tanzania, to ensure the safety and eventual return of the stranded citizens. He emphasized the importance of their safety, advising them to remain cautious and monitor the situation closely, with authorities guiding them on the necessary precautions.

The travel advisory from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns Cypriot citizens to avoid areas with gatherings and demonstrations, remain vigilant, and follow local authorities’ instructions. It also advises them to stay informed through international and local media and avoid non-essential movements.

In case of emergency, Cypriot citizens can reach out to the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in Kenya or the Consular Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through provided contact details. Additionally, citizens are encouraged to register on the online platform for Cypriots abroad, Connect2CY.
