Brussels: Cyprus’ Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, flies to Brussels on Monday, to attend the extraordinary Environment Council of the European Union, scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting will focus on shaping a General Approach to amending the European Climate Law. Ministers aim to define the path toward a new interim target for 2040 and discuss about updating the EU’s climate goals for 2035. These deliberations come ahead of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP30), which will take place in Bel©m, Brazil, in November 2025.
On the sidelines of the Council, Minister Panayiotou will hold a bilateral meeting with France’s Minister of Environment. Discussions will cover preparations for Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2026, as well as areas of common interest in environmental and climate policy.
Minister Panayiotou is expected to return to Cyprus on Wednesday, November 5.
