Nicosia: Director of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC) Stavros Stavrinos revealed to CNA that the organization has formally requested in principle approval from the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) to initiate the development of energy storage systems. This move aligns with the rights conferred to TSOC by existing legislation.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Stavrinos highlighted that TSOC is actively addressing applications from private investors who aim to install autonomous storage facilities connected directly to the Transmission System. Currently, Preliminary Terms of Connection have been granted to seven applicants, marking a combined capacity of 151 MW/410 MWh.
Stavrinos further indicated that within the upcoming two months, the issuance of Preliminary Terms of Connection is anticipated for additional applications, collectively amounting to a capacity/duration of 80 MW/160 MWh.
Stavrinos emphasized the urgency of developing energy storage systems given the evolving dynamics of the Cyprus electricity system. The high integration of renewable energy sources (RES), juxtaposed with average electricity demand, necessitates prompt measures to optimize the integration of RES-generated energy, minimize power generation reductions from RES, and ensure robust system response during faults.
Stavrinos concluded that the immediate establishment of these storage facilities by TSOC is essential to effectively address the fundamental challenges currently present in the Cyprus electricity system’s operation.
