Nicosia: Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection of the Republic of Cyprus, Dr. Nicholas Ioannides, has expressed certainty that with unity and commitment to international law, Cyprus can achieve freedom and prosperity for future generations. Speaking at the national memorial service of the heroes of Kontemenos, Ioannides emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts in ensuring a free and prosperous Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Ioannides delivered a eulogy on behalf of the President of the Republic, highlighting the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus as a blatant violation of international law. He firmly stated, “We will not accept the division, the presence of occupying troops and the violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.”
The Deputy Minister stressed the commitment of the Cypriot government, under President Christodoulides, to continue efforts toward a just, sustainable, and functional solution to the Cyprus problem. “Our goal remains the liberation of our homeland, the freedom from ongoing occupation, and a functional state without occupying troops and guarantor rights,” he said.
Ioannides also emphasized the necessity of ensuring human rights and freedoms for all legitimate residents of Cyprus within a modern European framework. He acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that the struggle for a unified Cyprus requires patience, perseverance, and faith in shared principles.
The Cyprus issue has persisted since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied the northern third of the island. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana concluded without success.
The UN Secretary-General announced an upcoming informal meeting on the Cyprus issue at the end of July, following a similar meeting in Geneva. Initiatives have been agreed upon, including the opening of crossing points and the creation of a Technical Committee on Youth.
The appointment of Mara Angela Holgun Cu©llar as the UN’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus and Johannes Hahn as the European Commission’s Special Envoy for Cyprus reflects the ongoing international efforts to facilitate a settlement process.
