Nicosia: The Church of Cyprus is appealing to the Egyptian government to uphold the continued operation of the Sinai Monastery, a site of significant historical and religious importance. Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus emphasized the longstanding relationship between the Church and the Monastery, urging Egypt to maintain a tradition respected for centuries.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Archbishop Georgios issued a written statement expressing concern over the future of the Monastery. He highlighted the universal support from the Orthodox community in defending the Monastery’s rights, emphasizing its historical respect across various regimes, governments, religions, and doctrines. The Archbishop remarked on the Monastery’s renowned status and the invaluable religious and cultural artifacts it safeguards.
Archbishop Georgios questioned the rationale behind challenging such long-standing traditions, especially in an era that champions religious freedoms, property respect, and human rights. He urged the Egyptian government to honor its agreement with the Sinai Brotherhood, reinforcing the call for the Monastery’s uninterrupted operation.
Expressing solidarity with Archbishop Damianos of Sinai, the Archbishop of Cyprus conveyed prayers for the swift restoration of the Monastery’s established rights, which have been recognized for centuries.
