Transport Minister and Deputy Minister for Shipping in Brussels to discuss “Fit for 55” proposed package

Minister of Transport and Deputy Minister of Shipping will hold in Brussels a series of contacts with members of the European Parliament and European Commission officials on the “Fit for 55” proposed package.

A press release by the Transport Ministry says that Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yiannis Karousos and Deputy Minister for Shipping Vasilis Demetriades will hold contacts focusing on the upcoming new legislative package of the EU, “Fit for 55”, which aims to turn the EU into the first climate neutral continent by 2050.

The press release adds that while Cyprus shares the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the proposed package, which is being negotiated in the Council and the European Parliament, affects important sectors of the Cypriot economy, such as shipping and air transport.

The Cypriot officials will present the national positions of Cyprus with the aim to formulate the conditions for achieving improvements in various provisions of the legislation under negotiation, the press release concludes.
