Trade deficit up by nearly 23% in first four months of 2022, provisional data show

The trade deficit increased by 22.79% in the period January-April 2022, compared to the same period of 2021, reaching €2,240.9 mn, compared to €1,825 mn, according to provisional data published on Thursday by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat) for April 2022.

In particular according to Cystat’s data, total imports of goods (from EU member states and from third countries) in January – April 2022 amounted to €3,317.5 mn compared to €2,626.1 mn in January – April 2021, recording an increase of 26.3%. Total exports of goods (to EU member states and to third countries) in January – April 2022 were €1,076.5 mn compared to €801.1 mn in January – April 2021, registering an increase of 34.4%.

Based on the provisional data, total imports of goods were €838 mn compared to €694.8 mn in April 2021, recording an increase of 20.6%, while total exports of goods in April 2022 were €283.9 mn compared to €242.1 mn in April 2021, recording an increase of 17.3%.

Imports from other EU member states in April 2022 were €527.9 mn and from third countries €310 mn, compared to €495.5 mn and €199.3 mn respectively in April 2021. Imports in April 2022 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels and aircrafts), with a total value of €35.8 mn compared to €84.9 mn in April 2021.

Exports to other EU member states in April 2022 were €83.7 mn and to third countries €200.2 mn, compared to €82.1 mn and €160 mn respectively in April 2021. Exports in April 2022 include the transfer of economic ownership of mobile transport equipment (vessels), with total value of €35.5 mn compared to €43.2 mn in April 2021.

The Statistical Service of Cyprus has also published the final data on the foreign trade of Cyprus for March 2022.

According to this, total imports of goods (from EU member states and from third countries) amounted to €1,001.2 mn in March 2022 compared to €596.5 mn in March 2021, recording an increase of 67.8%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in March 2022 were €156.6 mn compared to €120.3 mn in March 2021, recording an increase of 30.2%. Domestic exports of industrial products in March 2022 were €146.1 mn compared to €109.5 mn in March 2021, whilst domestic exports of agricultural products in March 2022 were €9.9 mn compared to €9.5 mn in March 2021.

Exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in March 2022 were €115 mn compared to €103.1 mn in March 2021, recording an increase of 11.5%.
