Slight increase in government employment in May and employment in the Broad Public Sector

An increase was recorded in government employment in May of 2022, compared to the corresponding month of 2021, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT). Also, CYSTAT records an increase in employment in the Broad Public Sector in the first quarter of 2022, compared t 2021.

Specifically, in May 2022 total government employment increased by 360 persons (0.7%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2021 and reached 53.668 persons, according to CYSTAT. Also, permanent staff decreased by 683 persons (-2.6%), from 26,686 to 26,003 persons. Casual staff increased by 1,056 persons (5.8%) and reached 19,251 persons compared to 18,195 persons in May 2021.

According to the same source, compared to May 2021 an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.2%) and in Educational Service staff (2.4%), whereas a decrease is observed in Security Forces staff (-0.1%). There is a decrease in all three categories of permanent staff and the highest is observed in Civil Service staff (-3.4%). On the contrary, there is an increase in all three categories of casual staff and the highest is observed in Educational Service staff (9.4%). A decrease is observed in Hourly Paid Workers (-0.2%) compared to May 2021.

Compared to April 2022, an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.2%), whereas a decrease is observed in Educational Service staff (-2.1%) and in Security Forces staff (-0.4%). In permanent staff the same decrease (-0.2%) is observed in the categories of Civil Service and Security Forces, whereas the permanent Educational Service staff remains stable. In casual staff an increase is observed in Civil Service staff (0.7%), whereas a decrease is observed in Educational Service staff (-5.0%) and in Security Forces staff (-0.6%). An increase is observed in Hourly Paid Workers (0.9%) compared to April 2022.

Increase in employment in the Broad Public Sector in the first quarter of 2022

CYSTA also published data regarding the employment in the Broad Public Sector in the first quarter of 2022, which reached 72,456 persons. The employment in General Government was 66.813 and in the Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies 5,643 persons.

As explained, in General Government, which consists of the Government, Non-Profit Organizations and Local Authorities, total employment reached 53,655, 8,843 and 4,315 persons respectively.

The employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 2.637 persons (3,8%) compared to the same quarter of 2021. The employment in Central Government increased by 2.380 persons (4,0%) and in Local Authorities by 293 persons (7,3%), whereas the employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies decreased by 36 persons (-0,6%).

Compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, the employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 893 persons (1,2%). Employment increased in Central Government by 995 persons (1,6%), decreased in Local Authorities by 102 persons (-2,3%), whereas it remained stable in Publicly Owned Enterprises.
