Sean O’Fearghail, the Ceann Comhairle of the 33rd Dáil to pay official visit to Cyprus

Sean O’Fearghail, the Ceann Comhairle of the 33rd Dáil, arrives in Cyprus for an official visit between 6-10 June at the invitation of Speaker of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou.

Heading a delegation, the Fianna Fáil TD and Ceann Comhairle will meet with his counterpart and hold separate meetings with Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Interior Minister Nicos Nouris, chairman of the House Foreign and European Affairs Committee Harris Georgiades and Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou.

Ó Fearghaíl will address the plenary of the H?use on Thursday, 9 June at 1600 and together with Demetriou they will address a gathering on the European Maritime Day, organised by CMMI, Centre of Excellence in Marine and Maritime Research, Technology Development and Innovation in Larnaca.

Ó Fearghaíl and his delegation will also meet Famagusta Mayor Simos Ioannou at the Cultural Centre of occupied Famagusta in Dherynia. They will also meet the Irish contingent of UNFICYP and the Committee on Missing Persons’ Laboratory.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
