Nicosia: Rotational, controlled power cuts commenced at 6:52 pm on Wednesday, initiated by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO) throughout Cyprus. This measure was necessitated by an inability to meet electricity demand due to faults at Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) power stations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, CTSO Director Stavros Stavrinos stated that the load shedding began at 6:52 pm as a response to the demand challenge. He specified that the power cuts would persist until around 9:00-9:30 pm, with electricity being cut in groups across the island. Each group is expected to experience outages lasting approximately 18-20 minutes.
CTSO had earlier announced on Wednesday the simultaneous faults at EAC power generation units at the Dekeleia and Vasiliko Power Stations. Considering the total available generation capacity, the CTSO highlighted the difficulty in meeting peak demand during the evening hours of 6:00-10:00 pm, with a potential shortfall in supply.
Efforts by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to bring an additional unit at Dekeleia online were unsuccessful, despite intensive attempts. In light of the situation, CTSO urged the public to use electrical appliances sensibly to conserve electricity during the critical peak hours.
