Republic of Cyprus Reaffirms Commitment to Greece-Cyprus-Israel Electricity Interconnection Project

Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus is “absolutely committed” to the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electricity interconnection project via a subsea cable, known as GSI, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides was responding to journalists’ inquiries during his visit to Paralimni High School at the start of the school year. He was asked to address comments made by Greek Prime Minister Kyriacos Mitsotakis, who stated that for the project to proceed, Cyprus must demonstrate its commitment. The President emphasized Cyprus’s dedication to the project by reiterating its significance.

President Christodoulides highlighted the government’s political commitment, citing his and Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos’s visit to the United Arab Emirates. During the visit, they discussed the project with the UAE President and explored potential investment opportunities related to the initiative.

He further mentioned that Cyprus and Greece have made specific commitments to the project. “The Republic of Cyprus will meet the commitments it has undertaken,” he assured. He expressed hope that all parties involved would adhere to their commitments.

The President stressed that the project is linked to national sovereignty issues and cautioned that public discussions on the matter are unhelpful. He insisted that he would not jeopardize Cyprus’s national interests through public statements, despite any provocation.
