Chisinau: Cyprus Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna engaged in discussions with Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov to explore avenues for advancing Moldova’s accession negotiations during a meeting held in Chisinau. Raouna also met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu to discuss the roadmap for achieving tangible results in collaboration with Moldova during the Cyprus EU Presidency.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna acknowledged the commendable progress made by Moldovan authorities regarding reforms. She emphasized that the upcoming Cyprus EU Presidency is preparing for a Presidency that is results-oriented and driven by a vision for a stronger and more resilient European Union. Raouna highlighted that enlargement is a crucial component of this vision, as it is a transformative tool that has historically driven reforms and progress within the EU.
Raouna reiterated Cyprus’s commitment to supporting enlargement efforts, stating that Cyprus aims to be an honest broker and constructive partner during its Presidency. She recognized the determination and courage of Moldova’s government and people in pursuing reforms and strengthening democratic institutions despite external pressures and threats.
Furthermore, Raouna noted that the EU’s Growth Plan for Moldova, adopted in March, represents the largest financial support package provided to Moldova by the EU. This plan includes up to 1.6 billion euros in grants and loans aimed at boosting the Moldovan economy, creating jobs, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
