Nicosia: Under the slogan ‘Love is not afraid,’ the Pride March 2025 took place on Saturday in Nicosia. In a press release, Accept LGBTI Cyprus, who organised the event, stated that this year’s Pride has returned as a protest march, with participants reclaiming the color black.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Accept LGBTI Cyprus emphasized that black is often associated with negative connotations by groups spreading fear and hatred. However, the organization asserted that anyone can use the color without negativity and announced that many Pride marches across Europe would follow this initiative. They highlighted the global challenges facing democracy, equality, and human rights.
The press release further elaborated that the event aims to embrace all aspects of identity, with color serving as a guide within the soul. The message of the march was clear: participants can protest, demand, dance, and celebrate in every color because love transcends color.
Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, addressed the event representing the Presidency. In a post on X, she described Pride as the opposite of shame and a statement supporting universal human rights. She expressed gratitude to Accept for their ongoing efforts in promoting respect and equality.
Raouna also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting free expression, self-determination, and equal treatment for all individuals. She highlighted the National Strategy for the Rights of LGBTQI+ Individuals 2025-2028 as a significant advancement in this endeavor.
