Presidential Commissioner says Turkey’s inhumane policy on missing must no longer be tolerated by UN, EU

Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou held a meeting on Monday with a representation of the relatives of fallen and missing Greeks during the Turkish invasion against Cyprus in 1974, whom he assured that the government of Cyprus continues the struggle to clarify the fate of all missing persons.

Photiou said that the agony and burden of uncertainty about the fate of their beloved ones is an unacceptable situation caused by Turkey’s inhumane policy since Ankara refuses to cooperate to resolve the humanitarian aspect of the missing persons.

“The international community and the world’s powers, especially the United Nations and the European Union, cannot and must not continue tolerating the inhumane policy of the occupying force, a policy that brutally conflicts with the basic principles and values of civilized humanity and of human rights”, the Presidential Commissioner stressed.

He said that the government is working in Cyprus and abroad with the organised groups of the relatives of the missing persons and the government of Greece, to reverse the dangerous situation that has been created, especially in recent years.

He assured the relatives of the missing Greeks that Cyprus continues the struggle until the thorough investigation of the fate of every missing person.

“This is a commitment, an obligation and a duty for our heroes and their families”, he underlined.

Concluding, he expressed the wish that there is soon an end to the suffering due to this humanitarian issue and that the next events would take place in a free country.
