Nicosia: President Nikos Christodoulides will travel to El Alamein, Egypt, on Tuesday to participate in the Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Trilateral Summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis stated that President Christodoulides will make the journey to El Alamein on Tuesday morning, following an invitation from President el-Sisi, to engage in the trilateral summit alongside the Egyptian and Greek leaders. Preceding the summit, President Christodoulides is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with his Egyptian counterpart.
Letymbiotis highlighted that the Trilateral Summit is occurring at a critical juncture for the region, noting that in light of broader geopolitical developments, the stable cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, as well as the significance of close coordination through regional cooperation frameworks, is increasingly apparent. The Cyprus-Greece-Egypt trilateral partnership is of particular importance.
He emphasized that the trilateral framework has evolved into an essential mechanism for regional coordination and cooperation, leveraging the geographical positions of the three nations, the European Union membership of Cyprus and Greece, and Egypt's significant influence in the Arab world and the broader region.
President Christodoulides will hold a bilateral meeting with President el-Sisi before the trilateral discussions, as stated by the Spokesperson.
'The relations between Cyprus and Egypt, grounded in historical and political ties, have significantly expanded and deepened in recent years, now upgraded to a Strategic Partnership level,' Letymbiotis remarked. He mentioned that the cooperation between the two countries spans multiple areas, focusing on energy, security, and the economy, alongside close political and diplomatic coordination on regional and international matters.
The summit discussions will center on developments in the wider region and the further strengthening of cooperation between the three countries, Letymbiotis indicated. The goal is for the countries to contribute to ensuring security, stability, and cooperation in a geostrategically important region.
During his visit, President Christodoulides will also attend the opening ceremony of the El Alamein International Airshow as President el-Sisi's honorary guest. The Trilateral Summit is set to begin at 1pm, with statements to the media by the leaders anticipated upon its conclusion. President Christodoulides will be joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos, Letymbiotis, and government officials.
