Nicosia: Greenhouse gas emissions in Cyprus increased by 2% in 2025 compared with 2024, reaching 9.21 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, according to a report by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) published on Monday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the report, prepared in cooperation with the International Energy Agency (IEA), indicates that Cyprus' total emissions in 2025 were 66% higher than in 1990. However, when compared to 2005, the emissions remained essentially unchanged, with figures standing at 9.199 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2005 and 9.210 million tonnes in 2025.

In 1990, emissions in Cyprus were estimated at 5.554 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, while in 2015 they increased to 8.415 million tonnes. On a per capita basis, emissions in Cyprus reached 7.386 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2025, based on a population of 1.247 million. In comparison, per capita emissions were higher in 2005, at 8.951 tonnes, and stood at 7.245 tonnes in 1990.

Additionally, emissions per unit of GDP in purchasing power parity terms were recorded at 0.173 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per thousand dollars in 2025, a marked decrease from 0.301 in 2005 and 0.346 in 1990. This trend in Cyprus for 2025 contrasted with the broader EU picture, where emissions from the 27 Member States fell by 0.2% compared with 2024, totaling 3.127 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent, and were 35.6% below 1990 levels. The EU's share of global emissions was noted at 5.8%.
