Nicosia:President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman are scheduled to meet under United Nations auspices on Tuesday, October 13, at 3:30 p.m., as announced by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the spokesperson emphasized the objective of making meaningful progress towards resuming negotiations within the agreed framework, highlighting the UN Secretary-General's personal commitment to this effort.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite several rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has been elusive due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at Crans-Montana in Switzerland, ended without agreement.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose term is nearing its conclusion, has announced plans to convene another meeting in a broader format, pending adequate preparation, although no specific timeline has been provided. He has secured the consensus of both sides and the guarantor powers. María Angela Holguín, Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, will engage with the parties, while Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto serves as the European Commission's Special Representative for Cyprus, taking over from EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
