Nicosia:Marina Neophytou has been elected as the new Rector of the University of Cyprus, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to hold this position at the institution. Neophytou, previously the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, secured her victory with 214 votes in the fourth round of voting.
According to Cyprus News Agency, The election results were announced at the University of Cyprus Sports Centre by Savvas Christodoulou, the Returning Officer for the 2026 Rectoral Elections. Out of 486 eligible voters, 437 cast their votes, with 432 valid ballots and 5 invalid ones. Over the course of four rounds, Neophytou successfully gained the necessary support to win, defeating rival Ioannis Yapintzakis, who received 183 votes in the final round.
Neophytou expressed gratitude for the trust placed in her and emphasized the need for a more efficient voting system. She stated, "The community has decided; it has spoken. We are moving forward together into the future." She received congratulations from the outgoing Rector, Tasos Christofides, and other colleagues.
Following Neophytou's election, the process to elect Vice-Rectors for various positions commenced. Nominees include Georgia Panayiotou for Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs, and Antonis A. Ellinas and Marios D. Dikaiakos for Vice-Rector of International Relations, Finance, and Administration.
