President Christodoulides and House President Demetriou Discuss Institutional Cooperation

Nicosia: The continuation of cooperation between the executive and legislative branches was discussed on Monday afternoon at the Presidential Palace by President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou. This meeting marked their first official encounter following Demetriou's re-election.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides extended his congratulations to Demetriou on her re-election, expressing his hope and confidence that the cooperation between the two branches would persist. He emphasized the shared challenges and problems, asserting that cooperation would continue for the citizens' benefit.

Demetriou affirmed the exemplary nature of the existing cooperation, stressing its imperative continuation for the interests of citizens and the nation. She acknowledged the presence of major challenges, reforms, and pending bills, assuring her commitment to representing her colleagues and ensuring institutional functionality.

In response to journalists' questions, Demetriou highlighted the importance of continuing institutional cooperation between the executive and legislative branches. She also mentioned President Christodoulides' briefing on his meeting with UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Mar­a ngela Holgu­n, and developments regarding the Cyprus issue, emphasizing the goal of liberation and reunification as a priority.

Describing the cooperation from 2023 to the present, Demetriou labeled it an institutional necessity, noting its effectiveness in passing legislation that benefits citizens. She stressed the importance of maintaining this cooperation.

Demetriou also addressed upcoming government bills, such as pension reform, and noted that parliamentary committees would promptly begin their work due to the critical nature of these issues. Regarding threats against her life, she mentioned discussing the matter briefly with the President and having been informed by the police, although she chose not to delve into details. She affirmed her sense of safety and the importance of politicians expressing opinions freely, pending an investigation.
