The President of the Cyprus Republic, Nicos Anastasiades, will travel to Alicante, Spain, on September 30, 2022 to participate in the Summit of the Mediterranean Member States of the European Union (EU MED-9), following a relevant invitation by the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez.
According to a written statement by the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic, Andreas Iosif, the EU MED-9 Summit will also be attended by the leaders of Spain, Greece, France, Italy, Portugal, Malta, Croatia and Slovenia. The Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission will also participate in some discussions.
According to Iosif, the Alicante Summit will primarily deal with the effects of the ongoing war in Ukraine, focusing on the energy, economic and social challenges that the European Union and especially its southern part has to deal with, as well as the role that the Mediterranean countries have to play in the future of Europe.
In addition, among the other issues to be discussed, are the need for the prevailing of conditions of security, stability and to avoid challenges in the Mediterranean basin, the Cyprus issue, migration, the environment and green development.
Iosif said that once the MED-9 Summit wraps up, the President of the Republic will leave for Cyprus, where he is expected to return early on October 1, the date on which the anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus is celebrated.
