Nicosia: Cyprus has achieved a significant milestone by being recognized among the world’s leading countries in innovation, as highlighted in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025 Report by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Dr. Nikodimos Damianou, expressed satisfaction with Cyprus’ ranking, which underscores the country’s potential to overcome challenges and establish itself as a regional hub for innovation and technology.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Deputy Ministry’s press release emphasized that this achievement serves as motivation to pursue targeted policies aimed at enhancing research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and human capital. Cyprus has advanced two positions from the previous year, securing the 25th spot among 139 economies. It is categorized as an “Innovation Leader,” reflecting its exceptional performance relative to its development level.
Cyprus continues to hold the 2nd position within the North Africa and West Asia region, trailing only Israel. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the region’s competitiveness, where 14 out of 18 economies improved their rankings in 2025. Moreover, Cyprus ranks 16th globally in innovation results, indicating that its investments in innovation effectively translate into tangible products and services, benefiting the economy and society.
Additionally, Cyprus is recognized for its numerous top positions in various GII indicators, joining ranks with major global players such as the USA, Israel, China, and Singapore. The press release highlights that Cyprus leads in several areas, including the creation of mobile applications, and the export and import of cultural, creative, and ICT services. The country also excels in venture capital co-participation, reflecting the international community’s growing confidence in Cyprus’ innovation ecosystem.
