Ocean Viking redirected to Naples due to extreme weather

The NGO ship Ocean Viking carrying rescued 439 migrants and refugees was redirected to Naples by the interior ministry on Sunday after extreme weather forecasts in Liguria made sailing to Genoa as originally instructed prohibitive.

The ship operated by SOS Mediterranée had been due to dock in the Ligurian regional capital on Monday morning.

On Friday the Ocean Viking assisted several migrant boats in distress in coordination with the Italian coast guard in waters between Tunisia and Lampedusa before being told to navigate to Genoa for disembarkation.
