NPEs remained steady in August with loans in arrears rising for third consecutive month

Non-performing exposures (NPEs) in the Cyprus banking system remained relatively steady in August 2021, with loans in arrears over 90 days rising for the third consecutive month.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), NPEs in August amounted to €4.96 billion from €4.99 billion in the previous month, corresponding to 17.4% of total loans, which amounted to €28.46 billion in August from €28.53 in the previous month.

However, loans in arrears over 90 days, which exclude restructured facilities, rose to €3.86 billion marking a slight increase for the third consecutive month.

The coverage ratio amounted to 47.3% of total NPEs from 47% in the previous month, the CBC said.

Of the total NPEs, €2.66 billion or are held by households and €2.07 by corporations, of which €1.17 small and medium sized enterprises
