No arrangements for a visit by Lute so far, developments in Afghanistan have an impact, source tells CNA

No arrangements have been made so far as regards a visit of the UN Secretary-General`s special envoy, Jane Holl Lute, to Cyprus, a diplomatic source has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), noting that the situation in Afghanistan and the fact that Antonio Guterres and the UN in general focus on this right now, certainly have an impact on other issues.

Lute was expected to visit the island at the end of August – beginning of September to hold meetings with Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar.

“No arrangements have been made for a visit (by Ms Lute) for the time being. We are waiting. Certainly developments in Afghanistan and the focus of the SG, and the UN in general, on this issue are factors which have an impact” on other issues, the source told CNA, adding that “we will see how the situation evolves.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

Numerous UN backed talks to reunite the island have failed to yield results. A 5+1 Informal Meeting that took place in Geneva, on April 27-29, failed to find enough common ground to allow for the resumption of formal negotiations in relation to the settlement of the Cyprus problem.
