Nicosia: A new Eurobarometer survey reveals that 61% of citizens across the euro area support the abolition of 1 and 2 euro cent coins, with absolute majorities seen in all but three member states-Cyprus, Greece, and Spain.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Eurobarometer survey indicates sustained strong public backing for the euro and the Recovery and Resilience Facility. The survey highlights that 79% of participants view the euro as beneficial for the European Union, while 71% believe it is advantageous for their respective countries.
Furthermore, the survey results demonstrate considerable support for the Recovery and Resilience Facility, part of the NextGenerationEU initiative. A substantial majority of 68% endorse a recovery plan for all Member States, contingent on green, digital, and social investments and reforms.
The survey also explored public opinion on euro coins and banknotes, finding that 61% of respondents favor eliminating 1 and 2 euro cent coins. However, this sentiment does not achiev
e absolute majority support in Cyprus, Greece, and Spain.
Conducted between 7 and 15 October 2024, the Eurobarometer survey included interviews with over 18,600 respondents from all 20 euro area Member States. Additionally, the Standard Eurobarometer survey, released on 29 November, shows euro support reaching a historic high, with a 74% approval rate across the EU and 81% within the euro area.
