Nicosia: President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides assured the Bureau of the European Economic and Social Committee that Nicosia – which assumes the upcoming EU Presidency – is deeply committed to advancing a Europe that is united in purpose, sustainable in growth, and grounded in solidarity.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President addressed the 743rd meeting of the EESC Bureau, convening in Nicosia ahead of the EU Presidency beginning on January 1st. He noted that the meeting marks the beginning of the Presidency journey, prepared with diligence and deep commitment to the European project.
President Christodoulides emphasized that cooperation, participation, and dialogue are core principles of the European project. He stated that Cyprus will work collaboratively with the European Economic and Social Committee and all EU Institutions to achieve tangible progress and outcomes for the prosperity of all EU member states, regions, and citizens.
In his address, the President highlighted that the Cyprus EU Presidency is a significant opportunity for the country to contribute actively to shaping Europe’s future. He expressed the aim to deliver a Presidency that adds value for all Member States through constructive, transparent, and inclusive cooperation.
The President outlined priorities such as promoting policies to strengthen cohesion among Member States, fostering long-term growth and stability, enhancing defense and security, managing migration and borders, and addressing energy, water resilience, and affordable housing issues.
He affirmed unwavering support for Ukraine, acknowledging its fight for territorial integrity and Europe’s stability. Additionally, he noted that Cyprus’ region must be included in discussions, with a focus on advancing negotiations for a new Multiannual Financial Framework reflecting strategic priorities.
President Christodoulides also highlighted water scarcity as a critical issue, noting Cyprus’ severe climate challenges. The Cyprus Presidency will prioritize swift and coordinated action to strengthen Europe’s water resilience and adaptation to water stress.
The President concluded by stating that deliberations in the Council will work towards advancing discussions on the Water Resilience Strategy, contributing to the European Climate Adaptation Plan and enhancing water preparedness and resilience across the EU.
