Athens: The next steps for the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electricity link, known as the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), have been finalized following a significant meeting in Athens. Cyprus Energy Minister George Papanastasiou and Greek Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou reached this agreement, aiming to advance the project that connects the three countries’ electricity grids.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting, described as constructive by Papanastasiou, was held in a cooperative atmosphere, reflecting the direction set by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. Both parties agreed on the upcoming phase of work necessary for the GSI project, focusing on resolving outstanding regulatory issues, particularly those arising from the transition from the EuroAsia Interconnector to the GSI.
Papanastasiou emphasized the importance of addressing these regulatory matters promptly. He mentioned that a meeting between the two regulators and the project developer is being planned, possibly for next week, with the potential inclusion of an independent observer to ensure effective progress.
The Cypriot Minister also highlighted the involvement of EU Energy Commissioner Dan J¸rgensen, who has requested to participate in a videoconference regarding the project. This meeting, initially set for Thursday, has been rescheduled for the following week, as the Commissioner seeks to understand the factors contributing to current delays, which are closely monitored by the European Commission.
The Athens meeting, according to Papanastasiou, occurred in a positive climate, affirming the commitment to the project’s implementation as directed by the leaders of Greece and Cyprus. When questioned about the financial aspects of the project, Papanastasiou indicated that these issues would be addressed once regulatory matters are resolved. He mentioned that a sum of £25 million is part of the ongoing process, emphasizing the need for action over statements.
The Greek Energy Ministry’s statement corroborated the constructive nature of the meeting, highlighting the presence of Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos and Cyprus Ambassador to Greece Stavros Avgoustidis. It confirmed the alignment on the next steps for the GSI, consistent with the direction set by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and President Christodoulides.
