Nicosia:A public lecture will be held by the Archaeological Research Unit of the University of Cyprus, presenting recent findings from the Apollo Sanctuary at Tamassos-Frangissa. The lecture, part of the 66th Public Lecture Series for the Winter Semester 2026, is scheduled for Monday, October 5th, 2026, at 19:30 EET. It will take place in Amphitheatre E010 on the Old Academy Campus, with an option to attend via Zoom.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Matthias Recke from the Institut f¼r Arch¤ologische Wissenschaften at Goethe University in Frankfurt will lead the presentation. The lecture, titled "Second time's a charm: The New Excavations at the Apollo Sanctuary of Tamassos-Frangissa - Results and Perspectives," will explore the findings from recent excavations. These excavations, conducted by the universities of Frankfurt and Rostock, have uncovered significant archaeological remains, including numerous statue bases in their original positions.
The sanctuary, in use from the late 7th century to the late Hellenistic period, was once considered the most important sanctuary in Cyprus. The research offers new insights into the display of votive offerings and the cult practices of ancient Cyprus. The lecture will highlight discoveries and research results from the excavation campaign completed in 2026.
