Limassol: Ministers of Interior, Agriculture, and Environment, along with the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, have acknowledged the urgent need to revise current procedures and enhance specific provisions in plans to effectively respond to large-scale incidents like the recent Limassol wildfire.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou described the situation as unprecedented and extremely dangerous, highlighting the intensity of the fire that burned 10 acres per hour, as opposed to the usual 2.2 acres. Despite improvements over the past two years, Ioannou emphasized the necessity for further strengthening to better prepare for such disasters.
Ioannou explained that the government has acted swiftly to assess damages and provide financial support. A total of pound 2.2 million has been distributed to affected families, with additional provisions for rent subsidies and restoration of damaged properties. The Minister also highlighted ongoing initiatives for community cleanup and communication improvements.
Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panayiotou, outlined plans for anti-erosion and anti-flood protection measures, with projects divided into phases for timely completion. She also mentioned financial support for the primary sector and extensive forestry department restructuring to adapt to new challenges.
Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Nikodemos Damianou, stressed the importance of adopting innovative solutions, such as sensors and artificial intelligence, to reduce risks and enhance response capabilities.
Efforts continue to ensure effective management of natural disasters and support for affected communities in Cyprus.
