Migrant overpopulation has exceeded 5% in our semi-occupied country, Interior Minister says

The migrant overpopulation in Cyprus has exceeded 5% in our semi-occupied country, Interior Minister Nikos Nouris has said and noted that Turkey’s practice of sending immigrants to Cyprus is evolving into a new hybrid threat.

The Minister, who was speaking at the presentation of the book of Andreas Morfitis entitled “Lost Expectations”, referred to the statement of the EU Interior Ministers’ Meeting last week in Luxembourg, which addressed “the tragic situation of the front-line countries regarding immigration”.

Moreover, he said that after three years of intensive efforts the European Commission has for the first time recognized the need for a practical support to Cyprus both for the relocation of a number of migrants from Cyprus but also for the guarding of the green line, and the financial support to help manage the “migrant overpopulation that exceeds 5% in our semi-occupied homeland”.

He also referred to Ankara’s practice of instrumentalizing the immigration saying that it is evolving into a new hybrid threat against Cyprus with the obvious purpose and goal of the conscious effort to change the demographics of the island by channeling migration flows from the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus through the green line to the areas controlled by the Republic.
