Middle East Crisis Highlights Cyprus EU Presidency Goals, Says President


Ayia napa: The crisis in the Middle East has underscored many of the objectives set by the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, according to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. Despite arising regional challenges, the planning and progression of the EU Presidency continue as scheduled.



According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides addressed journalists during his visit to the Ayia Napa Marina, where preparations are in full swing for the Informal Meeting of Heads of State or Government scheduled for April 23-24, 2026. He expressed pride in the ongoing Cyprus EU Presidency, citing “very significant results” achieved thus far, which he publicly acknowledged.



President Christodoulides highlighted that the Cyprus EU Presidency is progressing positively, with the Deputy Minister for European Affairs recently reporting favorable outcomes in the Council of Ministers, reflecting advancements toward European integration. The President emphasized the importance of an autonomous Union, noting that recent events have validated Cyprus’s strategic direction within its Presidency framework.



The President underscored the significance of the upcoming informal European Council, with the government actively preparing to ensure its success. During his visit to Ayia Napa Marina, he assessed the ongoing preparatory work. He also expressed anticipation for the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will participate in several bilateral meetings and inaugurate the Regional Firefighting Centre in Cyprus.



President Christodoulides reiterated his pride in the achievements of the first quarter and expressed commitment to furthering European integration and fostering an autonomous Union. Responding to inquiries, he acknowledged that the informal Council sends clear messages, with recent events affirming the correctness of Cyprus’s approach and priorities. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of the Presidency’s plans, which remain on track despite regional challenges.



During the visit, President Christodoulides was accompanied by several key officials, including the Government Spokesman, Minister of Defence, Minister of Justice, Chief of the General Staff, Deputy Chief of the Police, and the Deputy Minister of European Affairs.
