Balanced Migration Policy Discussed at MigraMed 2026 Conference

Nicosia:A balanced approach to migration, combining protection, effective management, and legal pathways, is crucial for sustainable migration policy, according to Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Nicholas Ioannides. Speaking at the MigraMed 2026 conference entitled 'Migration in the Eastern Mediterranean: Challenges, Responsibilities and European Perspectives', he emphasized the need for a credible migration system that safeguards those in genuine need while addressing irregular migration and smuggling.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ioannides highlighted that a successful migration policy requires cooperation among countries of origin, transit, and destination, as well as collaboration with European and international institutions, local authorities, and civil society organizations. The Deputy Minister also pointed out the importance of Cyprus-Italy cooperation, noting their shared Mediterranean identity and EU membership, and stressed their joint efforts within the MED5 framework to tackle migration challenges.

Italian Ambassador to Cyprus, Antonella Cavallari, underscored the human dimension of migration, emphasizing that it should be managed, not simply tackled. She noted the vital role of civil society alongside governments and highlighted the need to address the root causes of migration, with conflicts being a significant driver in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Nicosia Mayor, Charalambos Prountzos, called for a shift in public debate away from stereotypes, focusing instead on the real economic and social contributions of migrants. He noted the different perceptions of affluent migrants versus those from conflict zones and emphasized migrants' contributions to the Cypriot economy, particularly in sectors with labor shortages such as construction and tourism.
