Nicosia: The European Tourism Strategy was discussed, among other things, by Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis and European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas, in a meeting on Monday in Nicosia, according to an announcement by the Deputy Ministry on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Koumis held a meeting at the Deputy Ministry of Tourism with the European Commissioner as part of Tzitzikostas’ visit to Cyprus. The meeting highlighted the significance and contribution of the tourism sector to Cyprus’ economy, as well as the sector’s performance from 2019 to the present, noting the impact of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions on tourism in Cyprus and other countries.
The discussion primarily focused on the European Tourism Strategy, currently under development as an initiative of the European Commissioner. The strategy is largely based on the EU’s 2030 Strategic Agenda, which serves as the strategic guide for the European Council on tourism matters.
Koumis emphasized that the Government, through the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, is already implementing policy actions via the incentive plans announced by the Deputy Ministry, aligning with the EU 2030 tourism strategic agenda, with a particular focus on green transition and digital transformation.
During the meeting, the two officials also exchanged views on the Informal Ministerial Meeting scheduled for April 16-17, 2026, as part of the EU Cyprus Presidency. It was emphasized that, in addition to overseeing the final consultation round on the European Tourism Strategy, the Cyprus Presidency plans to present Council Conclusions to the EU Competitiveness Council in May 2026. This will involve submitting a revised text of the Tourism Agenda 2030, informed by prior evaluations, to enable the EU to adopt a new policy document that reflects current needs and suggestions of the Member States.
