Geneva: Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou will participate in the ministerial meeting on affordable housing and sustainability, organized within the framework of the 86th Session of the Committee on Housing, Urban Development and Land Management of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Ministry of Interior and the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 announced that the meeting will be held at the United Nations headquarters, with the participation of the Director-General of UNECE, along with ministers and high-ranking officials from member states in the European region of the organization.
The meeting will focus on the challenges and strategic priorities for ensuring affordability and sustainability in housing. Ministers will have the chance to present national policies and strategic actions aimed at providing citizens with access to affordable and sustainable housing options. Participants will also be invited to agree on commitments for implementing actions that ensure such housing availability.
Minister Ioannou will present Cyprus’s integrated housing policy, which aims to increase the supply of affordable housing and improve access for citizens. He will emphasize the importance of fostering synergies between the public sector, local authorities, and the private sector to effectively tackle housing challenges.
On the sidelines, Ioannou will hold separate meetings with UNECE Director-General Tatiana Molcean and Slovenia’s Minister of Social Solidarity, Simon Maljevac. Discussions will include the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council in early 2026 regarding housing and objectives under the European Affordable Housing Plan.
