Nicosia: The KIOS Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus is working in collaboration with Aeolian Dynamics and H. Wise Wire Energy Solutions to develop a decision-support platform aimed at optimizing the operation and market participation of renewable energy generation plants equipped with battery energy storage systems (BESS), according to the University of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this collaboration is part of the ‘OptimRES’ project, which is funded by the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU initiative and the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Cyprus. The project aims to address challenges like the intermittency of renewable energy sources (RES) and grid capacity constraints, which could impede the full potential of green energy as Europe works towards a climate-neutral economy.
A notable feature of the OptimRES project is its pilot demonstration at a generation plant in Cyprus, which integrates wind turbines, photovoltaics, and battery storage. This real-world demonstration aims to show the practical application and benefits of the platform.
The OptimRES platform is currently in development and has been integrated with the pilot site, facilitating bidirectional data exchange for visualization and control. In the upcoming months, the platform is expected to incorporate advanced features such as novel RES forecasting, bidding decision-making, and real-time control capabilities to fully demonstrate its innovative potential in a real-life environment.
