Ireland looks forward to continuing the close ties with Cyprus, Prime Minister tells President-elect

Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, sent a letter to President-elect Nikos Christodoulides to congratulate him for his recent victory in the Cyprus elections and says that he looks forward to the continuation of the close cooperation between Ireland and Cyprus, both on a bilateral level and within the European Union, on important issues and common challenges.

Ireland, the Premier says according to a press release by Christodoulides’ office, appreciates the important role played by the United Nations in Cyprus and feels proud of Ireland’s contribution to this mission over the decades.

He also says that he looks forward to a meeting with Christodoulides in March, at the European Council in Brussels.

A congratulatory message was also sent by the President of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, with whom President-elect had a phone communication last week. In it among other things, Al Sisi, affirms “my keenness on continuing the high-level coordination between our two countries towards further strengthening our comprehensive strategic partnership for the mutual benefit of our two friendly peoples.”

UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution in 1964, which recommended the establishment of UNFICYP on the island.

Following the Turkish invasion of 1974, the Security Council adopted a number of resolutions expanding UNFICYP’s mandate.
