Hunting Season Begins with 36,000 Hunters Expected to Participate

Nicosia: Some 36,000 hunters are expected to participate in the hunting season starting Sunday, November 2, as reported by the Game and Fauna Service Spokesperson, Petros Anagiotos. The season, which will continue until December 28, signifies a decline in the number of hunters obtaining or renewing licenses, attributed to modern lifestyle changes and a decrease in game populations.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Anagiotos emphasized the Service’s commitment to protecting and increasing game populations. He expressed optimism that preserving the natural environment and favorable weather conditions could lead to more hunting licenses in the future. The decline in hunters is linked to lifestyle changes and recent droughts affecting game availability.

Anagiotos urged hunters to adhere to safety protocols, including wearing orange clothing to ensure visibility and reduce accidents. He wished the hunters a successful season. The hunting of hares, partridges, and francolins is allowed every Sunday and Wednesday from November 2 to December 28, with specific bag limits for each outing.

The Forestry Department has also issued a warning for hunters to exercise caution in the countryside and forests. They are advised against lighting fires in unauthorized areas or discarding cigarette butts and lit matches. The Department encourages reporting any sightings of smoke or fire to the nearest Forest Station or by calling designated emergency numbers.
